HORIZONS AT SRES
St. Richard's has a strong commitment to serve its community, and the most successful example of this commitment is the school's support and sponsorship of the Horizons at St. Richard's summer program.
In 1996, St. Richard's Episcopal School chose to become an affiliate site for Horizons, a national program proven to reduce summer learning loss for children from low-income families. Because St. Richard's exists in a primarily low-income neighborhood in Indianapolis, they knew that Horizons would provide a chance for children in the area to gain access to additional resources and educational opportunities.
The mission of Horizons is to close the summer learning gap for Indianapolis kids from low-income families through:
- Intensive academic enrichment for students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade
- Fun learning environment
- Lifesaving swim lessons
- Year-round support for families
In 2019, Horizons brought 160 students from low-income families through the doors of St. Richard's. They hired 20 licensed and experienced educators to lead engaging educational programming for five weeks of summer. Every day, students participated in activities that improved their academic skills, their physical health, and their social emotional learning.
