Horizons at St. Richard's

St. Richard's has a strong commitment to serving its community. One example of this commitment is the school's support and sponsorship of the Horizons at St. Richard's program, a vital piece of our community culture.

Horizons is a tuition-free, 6-week summer academic and enrichment program held on our campus. Horizons promotes educational equity by creating resources and experiences to inspire a joy of learning for students outside of traditional school time. The goal is to support students in making learning gains rather than experiencing learning loss.

Year over year, Horizons at St. Richard’s hosts approximately 150 students from the Indianapolis community. Horizons at St. Richard’s is different from other summer programs because of the level of individualized instruction students receive along with the blend of both academic instruction and engaging enrichment. Because strong relationships with the families helps support the success of the students, Horizons also offers year-round programming approximately once each month, such as chess on Super Saturday.

Horizons is not a summer camp. It is not a summer school. It is an enrichment program staffed by certified teachers, teaching assistants, and interns.

In addition to classroom instruction that leads to averages of three months of gains in both reading and math, Horizons students take part in experiences outside of the classroom to build healthy bodies, emotional wellness, and connection with the wider Indianapolis community. Horizons students participate in swim instruction provided by the Jewish Community Center (JCC), social-emotional instruction guided by counselors from Indiana Wesylean’s School (IWU) Graduate Counseling Program, enrichment activities led by program partners, and academic field trip experiences.
